Is Your Coolant Ready to Race in 2018?
The NHRA season wrapped up this month with the finals held on Nov. 12 in Pomona, California, and racers will have a break till racing revs up again in February.
The off-season gives racers a chance to reevaluate and make adjustments, and we’re likely to see some switches between manufacturers, teams, vehicles, crew members, and even coolants.
Why Change Coolants?
If you race, you’ve probably heard of Evans Waterless Coolant. If you’re not using it yet, maybe you haven’t heard how it can help your vehicle perform better in race conditions.
Traditional antifreeze is mixed with water, usually in a 50-50 ratio. That’s a problem, because water boils at a relatively low a temperature—212°F at sea level atmospheric pressure, around 226°F when mixed 50-50 with glycol.
Under race conditions, coolant temperature can easily surpass the boiling point of water or water-based antifreeze. When that happens, the liquid designed to cool your engine will turn to vapor. That vapor loses its power to cool, which increases cooling system pressure, stresses components, and leads to boil-over. Water-based antifreeze also causes corrosion, promotes electrolysis, and requires periodic changeouts.
No Water, No Problem
Evans coolant is made of a blend of glycols, the same basic chemicals that are already commonly used in antifreeze. Because they do not contain water, Evans waterless engine coolants have a boiling point of 375°—well over the operating temperature of an engine—so they are able to keep your engine from overheating even under the most extreme race conditions.
And once you switch to Evans, changing your coolant is a thing of the past. Evans coolants last the life of the system—no flushing or replacing required.
When we’re at the races, people often ask us how our waterless coolant compares to other brands like Engine Ice, Maxima Coolanol, Bel-Ray Moto Chill, Amsoil, etc. While there are differences between antifreeze formulations, they all have one thing in common: they are all half water, so their boiling point, vapor pressure, corrosion protection, and lifespan are all pretty much the same.
